Dog
Bites
Did you know that dogs bite millions of
Americans each year? Dog bites occur at
an alarming frequency in our communities.
The owners and handlers of dogs are often
responsible and may be criminally liable
for the injuries that their pets inflict. Emergency room costs resulting
from a single dog bite can reach into the
tens of thousands of dollars, and victims
may suffer lasting injuries, and, in serious cases, death or
disfigurement.
Sadly, the majority of dog bite victims
are children. Even well trained dogs are
genetically predisposed to protect their
owners and territory, and may bite or attack
a stranger with little or no provocation.
If a dog bites you or a child in your care, clean
the wounds. Then seek medical attention and advice regarding rabies
treatment. If you are not familiar with
the dog or its owner, contact your local
animal control board and report the incident.
Animal control officers may be able to locate
the dog and determine its rabies vaccination
status.
The dog's prior behavior, the use of a
"Bad Dog" warning sign, information about
whether the dog was provoked, and the law
of the particular city or county where the
bite occurred help to determine the dog
owner's legal liability. Some people believe
the dog owner is liable only if he or
she knew or should have known that the dog
is aggressive, but simply owning a dog is
often sufficient grounds for legal liability.
See your doctor if you have been seriously
injured by a dog or other animal. Contact an attorney
who can help you protect your legal rights
and recover your medical costs. Remember that there may be time limits within
which you must commence suit.
